African Caribbean Kidney Education Enterprise® (ACKEE)

Our work includes educational sessions, peer support, and guidance for individuals diagnosed with kidney disease, living on dialysis, preparing for transplant or navigating life after transplant.

We work with healthcare providers, charities, and research institutions to address health inequalities, and we speak at conferences, community events and in the media, to share both expertise and lived experience.

The African Caribbean Kidney Education Enterprise® (ACKEE) works with Healthcare Trusts, renal clinicians, charities, CIC’s and media outlets to help provide kidney health education, prevent kidney disease and promote organ donation in African Caribbean communities.

Case study 1
Earlier this year, an individual from the Black African community approached ACKEE after being diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. They were unsure about the condition, its progression, and how to manage their health. Through one-to-one guidance and signposting to trusted medical resources, we helped them understand their diagnosis, the importance of managing their condition, and their treatment options. The individual later shared that this support gave them clarity, reduced their anxiety, and helped them communicate more confidently with their healthcare team.

Case study 2

Earlier this year, ACKEE was approached by Just Worldwide UK to help encourage black individuals diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) in the United Kingdom to take part in important research. The study consisted of a 45-minute online discussion and offered a £100 honorarium to selected participants for their time. ACKEE collaborated with Just Worldwide UK by writing a dedicated blog post and promoting the opportunity via social media channels, raising awareness, spreading vital information, and helping ensure that under-represented Black communities had the chance to share their lived experiences.

This collaboration not only expanded the reach of the research, but also deepened ACKEE's commitment to amplifying patient voices, advocating for inclusivity in healthcare, and leveraging digital platforms to drive meaningful participation.
